A couple of years ago, I was in a Martial Arts training seminar, and the instructor said something to me that has stuck with me ever since:
“What makes you comfortable today
will make you uncomfortable tomorrow,
BUT what makes you uncomfortable today
will make you very comfortable tomorrow.”
By that he meant, today it might feel good to watch tv instead of going to the gym, but over time, you will gain weight and eventually have health problems resulting from a sedentary lifestyle.
Today, it might be uncomfortable to put a little money into a retirement or savings account, but in the future, you’ll be grateful that you did it.
Today, it might make you uncomfortable to say “no” to an extra job or project at work, but later when you have more time and a better work life balance, you’ll be glad you did it.
I think that each of us has our own behaviors or habits that make us too comfortable or a little uncomfortable today. But I think it’s useful to imagine how taking actions now that shake up our habits or comfort level, may ultimately bring us closer to the things we want in our life. I know for me, I tend to avoid making myself or anyone uncomfortable whenever I can, but it can be useful to push yourself out of your comfort zone – your future self will thank you for it!
